There’s also some fun minor star-spotting to be done in the smaller roles. Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd gets his Paul Scofield on as the Duke of Verona, sternly admonishing the squabbling Capulets and Montagues from under an awesome hat. Damian Lewis glares and growls and all but rubs his hands together with evil glee as Juliet’s martinet of a father (rendered, in this unsubtle version, as a borderline child abuser). Kodi Smit-McPhee, a 17-year-old Australian actor who was memorable as Viggo Mortenson’s son in the phenomenally depressing Cormac McCarthy adaptation The Road, stands out as Romeo’s loyal cousin Benvolio, whose efforts to make peace only tighten the knot of doom. And Lesley Manville, a favorite actress of Mike Leigh’s, shines in the role of Juliet’s chatty, adoring nurse.
“We stand up here representing a diverse group of people, representing generations of families who have sought a better life here from places like Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Ireland,” said star Taylor Schilling, while a cast member added “Brooklyn!” ”And we know that it’s going to be up to us and all you, probably, to keep telling stories that show what unites us is stronger than the forces that divide us.”, Lily Tomlin was the lifetime achievement honoree Sunday, The ballet shoes clipart 77-year-old actress gave a warm, rollicking speech that dispensed both drinking advice and regret over wasting “a lot of time being ambitious about the wrong things.”..

The teen theater company STARS 2000 brings one of my favorite families to life as it presents “The Addams Family, a Musical Comedy” from July 22-Aug. 7, at the Diablo Valley College Performing Arts Center. This wonderfully weird story tells of daughter Wednesday bringing home to dinner her new (normal) boyfriend to meet her rather unorthodox family. The show is full of wonderful music and exciting dance numbers all performed by local talented teens. For tickets, call 800-838-3006.
