The Junior Pee Wee and Jr. Midget teams earned the trip to Nationals by taking first and second, respectively, at the regional qualifier on Nov. 28. The teams performed incredibly challenging routines full of basket tosses, reloads, full liberty pyramids, tumbling passes, one-leg stunts, and an extremely exciting, fast-paced dance routine. Both the Junior Pee Wee and Jr. Midget teams are advancing to the National Championships based on their strong performances. The fundraising event featured bounce houses, a climbing rock wall, and zorbs for the kids and live music, a silent auction and delicious food. Both cheer squads performed to the delight of the crowd. The girls also sold baked goods and candy leis.

Basking in Brazilian music: Rio de Janeiro-born Claudia Villela became one of the Bay Area’s most celebrated singers on the strength of her original compositions and her gorgeous multi-octave voice. But in recent years she’s focused less on her own music than on masterpieces by Brazilian composers like Jobim, Nascimento, Guinga, Bosco, Gil, and Baden Powell — all songwriters covered by the legendary Elis Regina, whose legacy Villela is celebrating in concert July 21 at the SFJazz Center in San Francisco. She’ll be joined by her regular Bay Area collaborators, including guitarist Jeff Buenz, bassist Gary Brown, and drummer Celso Alberti, as well as New York-based Brazilian pianist/accordionist Vitor Gonçalves, a rising star as a player and composer.
